Singing with Dave

I sang with my husband last night in the car after having dinner with friends. Driving home, driving anywhere, is more calming when I’m singing with Dave. His soft, sweet voice is perfect for the old folk songs he recorded on DVD from early stand-up comic days. The songs are the same as we sang together way back in college. Singing with Dave is comforting.

This is one of the great bonuses to have been married to a very talented man. He is with me. Still.

But he passed away eight years ago. He left behind all sorts of audio and video recordings, and many, many photos. You might remember him from “The Partridge Family.” He was the one who did not sing. He was also a first season regular on “Laugh-In.” He did not sing. As a cast member on “Alice,” he never sang.  And I’m pretty sure he did not sing on “The Love Boat,” “Barnie Miller,” “Fantasy Island,” and “Married with Children,” among others.

He never made any commercial recordings of the folk songs he loved. (“I’m just a Country Boy,” being one of my favorites.) I loved to hear him sing. Then. And now.

As I grow older I am even more grateful he thought to record the classic folk songs for his personal music collection. It’s our history. It’s my today. Singing with Dave.
